Romans 6 NIV – Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ What shall – Bible Gateway

16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

via Romans 6 NIV – Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ What shall – Bible Gateway.

This is what runs through my mind when I think about headship and the whole marital submission thing.  Clearly, people who engage in voluntary wifely submission don’t view themselves as slaves, and I doubt any husbands are hoping for an obedient slave wife.   But giving one person supremacy over an other is the same foundation as the master/slave relationship, even if it is lived out differently.  How could I ever serve Aaron as Christ serves the church and also serve Christ without being in a ‘two masters’ situation?

This verse isn’t talking about headship and submission.  I know.  It’s talking about sin and our freedom in the grace of Christ.  But it makes a point: when you OFFER yourself as a subordinate you become either sinful or self-righteous.  Self-righteous legalism is just one more form of sanitized idolatry.  Prizing the rule (man made rule, no less) over Christ.  Are the wages of legalism death?
